Mrs. Willey’s Book Bailey the Balsam Fir Tree

The branches from sturdy and fragrant balsam fir trees, grown in Downeast Maine, are used to construct the ten balsam bouquets that make up a veteran’s remembrance wreath. Those hand-made wreaths, with a single red bow, are sponsored each year by patriotic citizens who wish to remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and teach the next generation the value of freedom. Each December, the wreaths represent a symbol of respect and remembrance that adorn headstones and memorials across this great nation, as well as overseas, where U.S. service members are laid to rest. The movement once called the Arlington Wreath Project is now known by millions as Wreaths Across America.

While walking through a peaceful woodland, glancing up at a large and rugged tree, many have wondered to themselves, if that tree could talk and share what it has seen over the many years it’s grown and flourished, amid every weather condition imaginable, what story would it tell?

A new, recently published children’s book, written by life-long educator Nancy Willey and illustrated by Sarah Pedneault Anderson in Maine, may very well have answered that question.

Bailey the Balsam Fir Tree, was released during a recent apple grove dedication in honor of Mrs. Willey. It’s the first of several children’s books written by the author to be published, and it instantly became a hit with readers of all ages.

You see, Bailey, the balsam fir tree is no ordinary evergreen. Bailey grew up watching other balsam fir trees around him fulfil a meaningful destiny; one that he aspired to from the time he was a sapling.
