He joined at the age of 17 and served in the Heavy Mortar Division during the Korean War. He was awarded several medals for his service, including the Good Conduct Medal, a Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, an Army of Occupation Medal with Japan Clasp, the Combat Infantryman Badge 1st Award and the Purple Heart Medal. He was a charter member of the Korean War Veterans’ Association in NY. Four of my Dad's brothers also served. My grandmother-an Italian immigrant sent 5 of her sons off to preserve American freedoms and democracy. Like so many, my dad served humbly and rarely talked about his experience. Some of his memories of that time are preserved in a book titled The Korean War by Max Hastings.
