NHWSCE - Winter Street Cemetery
The Historic Winter Street Cemetery in Exeter NH is among the town's first burial grounds. In 1742, Colonel John Gilman requested in his will that the land be "forever a burial place." The town of Exeter fenced in the burial ground and it remained active until 1845, when the Exeter Cemetery on Linden Street came into use as a town burial ground. Burials were still held at Winter Street Cemetery in family owned plots after 1845.The graves of at least thirty veterans from the Revolutionary War as well as the Civil War can be found in the Winter Street Cemetery. Just a few notable veterans buried here include: General Nathaniel Folsom (commander of NH troops in the Revolutionary War), Dr. Samuel Tenney (Revolutionary War surgeon), Sgt. John Taylor Gilman (Revolutionary War veteran and former Governor of NH), Tobias Cutler (born into slavery and granted his freedom to serve in the Continental Army), and Jude Hall (born into slavery, fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill). It has been important for the Exeter Chapter DAR both past and present members, to remember Winter Street Cemetery, honor its inhabitants, and teach others the significance of this place and why it is so important to preserve it for future generations.
