According to his Silver Star citation, while he was serving with ODA 9116, McClintock "repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to provide life-saving treatment and secure medical evacuation for a wounded teammate. He was mortally wounded while courageously maneuvering through heavy enemy fire to secure a helicopter landing zone.' To Matt's teammates, he left the relative safety of a compound in an attempt to save a friend. We continue to serve in your place for our Country, and we thank your Mom and Dad for making such a man.
