George Augustus Tarbutton
George Augustus Tarbutton, Captain
Posted by: Gov. Jared Irwin Chapter, NSDAR
George Augustus Tarbutton - Captain - Washington County Dragoons - Co. E, 1 (Ramsey's) Gerogia Infantry - C.S.A. - Capt. Tarbutton has long been a sufferer from that fell disease, consumption, the result of a wound received in the body near the close of the war. At the first call for volunteers while a mere youth of 15 or 16 years of age he enlisted in the Washington Rifles, the first company that left this county for the war; by his soldier like bearing, and faithful discharge of duty he rose notwithstanding his youthfulness to the captaincy of the company, which rank he held at the close of the war. Among the gallant spirits that so nobly illustrated the South in the camp and battlefield, none were animated by a loftier purpose, or a sterner devotion to duty. Naturally modest, retiring and unassuming in his manners, his friendships weer not hastily formed, ut when formed were rarely if ever broken.
