A brave soldier who returned a different man, to a country who at the time barely recognized or acknowledged the sacrifices of those who served their country. His service and participation earned with merit, two Purple Hearts; National Defense and Vietnam Service medals with two Bronze Stars; and was classified as a Sharpshooter in Rifles and Grenades.As many who fought in Vietnam, my father was exposed to agent orange and had endured severe and chronic illnesses for decades due to this chemical exposure, (as many did, and still do). Heartbreakingly, eventually these illnesses caused him to pass away at the age of 76. My dad's humor, laughter, wit, and the desire to be around his family was such a treasure. He had such a passion for cars, woodworking, photography, and gardening. Everything he did was with great skill, precision and pride. He had a deep appreciation for nature, and a real love of people whom he cherished. His friends, family, and I we all miss him dearly, greatly love him, and he is remembered in splendid abundance. He went on to have a lifetime career with the U.S. Government in the Department of Agriculture and then serving a long-term position with the Foreign Service. He traveled the world during his career, enjoyed playing golf, cared and loved his family, and endearingly loved his beloved wife Cleo, who also did her part during WWII, residing in the DC area raising their family and working in administration for the U.S. Government. Bill was head of the flight crew on the presidents plane, “The Independence” during WWII. His son Homer Caldwell passed away this year, serving as an army combat engineer during the Vietnam War. These two are dearly missed, and remembered with much love. We are proud of the sacrifices they made to serve our nation; to fight for ours and other countries peace and rights.
