She became family and was my sister. Born on October 4, 1972, and laid to rest on December 14, 2016, she lived a life defined by service, strength, and unwavering dedication. For over 20 years she proudly served in the United States Army—Airborne, as a NCO, Drill Sergeant, and a graduate of Officer Candidate School. She deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, as an officer, always leading from the front and embodying the values she taught. Though she faced the unimaginable battle of brain cancer, she met it with the same courage and resilience that defined her entire life. The Army and her son were her world, and she gave both her absolute best every single day. She was one of the strongest people anyone would ever meet—steadfast, inspiring, and unforgettable. Her legacy of service, love, and strength continues to live on in all those who knew her. We miss you so much, Leslie. Willis, a true American hero and trailblazer. Mr. Willis embodied service, courage, and community. As one of the first Black Marines to train at Montford Point in 1942, he broke barriers under unimaginable conditions and went on to serve bravely in World War II, the Korean War, and the early Vietnam era, rising to the rank of Sergeant Major. His commitment didn’t end with his military career. Mr. Willis dedicated his life to uplifting veterans, fighting for equality, and strengthening the Philadelphia community — becoming the first Black commander of American Legion Post 21 and earning the honor of having Paschall Avenue renamed Albert Willis Way. A brave soldier who returned a different man, to a country who at the time barely recognized or acknowledged the sacrifices of those who served their country. His service and participation earned with merit, two Purple Hearts; National Defense and Vietnam Service medals with two Bronze Stars; and was classified as a Sharpshooter in Rifles and Grenades.As many who fought in Vietnam, my father was exposed to agent orange and had endured severe and chronic illnesses for decades due to this chemical exposure, (as many did, and still do). Heartbreakingly, eventually these illnesses caused him to pass away at the age of 76. My dad's humor, laughter, wit, and the desire to be around his family was such a treasure. He had such a passion for cars, woodworking, photography, and gardening. Everything he did was with great skill, precision and pride. He had a deep appreciation for nature, and a real love of people whom he cherished. His friends, family, and I we all miss him dearly, greatly love him, and he is remembered in splendid abundance. He went on to have a lifetime career with the U.S. Government in the Department of Agriculture and then serving a long-term position with the Foreign Service. He traveled the world during his career, enjoyed playing golf, cared and loved his family, and endearingly loved his beloved wife Cleo, who also did her part during WWII, residing in the DC area raising their family and working in administration for the U.S. Government.
