Moving Forward Together
Below, please find a guest blog from our TEACH Partner, The Military Child Education Coalition.
When Wreaths Across America announced their 2025 theme "Keep Moving Forward," inspired by Captain Joshua Byers' final life-saving command that became a battle cry for his unit and family, it resonated deeply with the Military Child Education Coalition’s mission. Through programs like Student 2 Student®, Frances Hesselbein Student Leadership Program, and supports like our Military Student Consultants, MCEC helps military-connected children navigate transitions and challenges. But perhaps no program better exemplifies the spirit of moving forward than our support for young military-connected caregivers through the Caregiving Youth Student Leadership Program.
The transition from child to caregiver often happens suddenly. These young people find themselves managing medications, assisting with physical therapy, or helping with daily tasks while trying to maintain their own academic progress. Many struggle silently, unsure where to turn for support or how to connect with others who understand their situation. "Sometimes, you grow up faster than you expect," says Julio, a high school sophomore who attended MCEC's Caregiving Youth Student Leadership Program in 2024. After his father returned from deployment with severe injuries, Julio became one of thousands of military-connected children balancing schoolwork with caring for a wounded parent.
MCEC's five-day leadership program, powered by Wounded Warrior Project®, brings these young caregivers together at no cost to their families. Every February, participants gather at the University of Texas, San Antonio to develop leadership skills, learn about available resources, and connect with peers who understand their unique challenges.
"I thought I was alone," Julio reflects, "but then I met other kids like me. They understood what it's like to grow up fast and miss out on things other kids take for granted. It made me realize I wasn't alone." The program helped Julio discover strategies for balancing his caregiving responsibilities with self-care and academic goals.
Beyond practical skills, the program builds a lasting network of support. Participants stay connected through social media groups and regular virtual meetups, sharing resources and encouragement as they navigate their caregiving journeys. Many return as peer mentors, helping new participants understand they're not alone. For these young caregivers, "keep moving forward" isn't just a theme – it's a daily reality. Each morning brings new challenges, many of which their peers can scarcely imagine. Yet through MCEC's support, they're discovering they don't have to move forward alone.
The next Caregiving Youth Student Leadership Program takes place February 14-18, 2025, at the University of Texas, San Antonio. MCEC continues to appreciate its impactful partnership with Wreaths Across America as we serve the needs of military-connected families and children across the country and worldwide.
"These young people embody the spirit of moving forward," says Kyra Bush, Vice President of Education Services at MCEC. "They show incredible strength and resilience while carrying adult responsibilities beyond their years. Our role is to ensure they have the support and resources to keep moving forward without losing sight of their own dreams and potential."
