Wreaths to Remember

On Dec. 16, thousands of volunteers throughout the country visited their local cemeteries to pay homage to the men and women who served in the armed forces as a part of Wreaths Across America, a nationwide commemorative event whose mission is to remember deceased veterans, honor those who are still living, and teach the next generation the value of freedom. Among the participating locations for the 2023 Wreaths Across America event was Oak Grove Cemetery in Pleasant Township. Organized by Army veteran Carrie Cole, she was joined by more than three dozen individuals who came out to pay their respects to the 165 veterans who are buried at the cemetery, including Raymond Hunter, Cole’s beloved grandfather who served in the Army and in the Korean War. The Grove City resident, pictured here after placing a new wreath at the headstone of her grandfather’s final resting place, said she was inspired to create sponsor group 0362 so his final resting place would not be the only one adorned by wreaths during this commemorative event. “I think that every veteran here deserves to be remembered not just for their service to this country but also for the life that they lived,” said Cole. From now until Jan. 16, individuals can purchase a wreath for next year’s event and that purchase will be matched by Wreaths Across America. Cole said she hopes to get enough individuals to sponsor a wreath so they can lay them at the gravesites of all veterans at the Ebenezer Cemetery as well.
