Sergeant Burton Woolery was the first soldier from Monroe County to be killed in combat in World War I. He was struck by a German shell in Esperance Ferme in France on July 29, 1918.
A graduate of Bloomington High School, Woolery was a freshman at Indiana University when war broke out. He immediately enlisted and served with Battery F of 150th Field Artillery, 42nd Rainbow Division.
American Legion Post 18 is named after SGT Burton Woolery.
