A Tribute
by Rita K. for Richard Kerwin, Army, Honored by Fort Custer National Cemetery

To many people you were just another person amongst them, but to all of us you were the true hero that many people could only dream of becoming! You endured a P.O.W. Camp in War World Two after being shot down with your crew and being forced to starve to near death in some of your camps, put into cattle cars when being transported to camps; and our American pilots up in the air were firing down on the cars, not knowing they had American Soldiers. Finally Patton’s tanks ran out of gas at your Camp Gates and Liberated you! You spent nearly two years as a P.O.W. Those wounds lasted a lifetime with you. But through it all you made a difference in your life my Hero! You married, raised five children, and had many grandchildren who loved your laugh and smile. You didn’t talk much about your days in the military, as it was painful and traumatic for you. But you’re remembered always and will never be forgotten! One of your sons made a career out of the military and another son served four years in the Military. Your family is and will always remember you as the Strongest Man. I always looked at you as my Hero.
