My uncle Lawrence was killed in France in 1944, when I was one year old. Obviously, I don't remember him, but I do remember when his body was expatriated home for burial. I'm not sure how old I was, but I remember being lifted up to see the flag on his coffin. And I remember the gold star in my grandparents' window. He was my dad's younger brother and was barely 20 years old.
