<i class="material-icons" data-template="memories-icon">card_giftcard</i><br/>Charles Sausedo, Army<br/><div class='remember-wall-long-description'>My grandfather, Charles Sausedo, served in the U.S. Army and fought in Korea. As Mexican-American who grew up near Azusa, CA, he was one of many from that community who volunteered for their country. He was a specialist with 105s Artillery. His Unit was on the Korean War Front, succeeding in pushing forward but reaching a point where supplies were running low. And where they were positioned, there was only one single road through the mountainscape, barely wide enough for soldiers to walk, let alone drive a truck through. As one would imagine, that was an opportunity for the opposition, and he thinks that that is what the opposition intended for them to do. Supply trucks and soldiers were being decimated, and ammunition and supplies were running low. With the situation becoming critical, the Captain of my grandfather's Unit asked for volunteers to drive back and forth on the supply route, communicating that the chances of survival were not in their favor. My grandfather volunteered, he said, "admittedly I was scared, but I just went and raised my hand." And for one year, he kept driving those trucks back through those supply routes. He said it was more challenging than he ever would think. The 24th Division would stack the trucks so high that he would see trucks fall off the cliffs right in front of him. The opposition would pick them off, soldiers and trucks, one by one. He said it got to the point where he stopped getting too acquainted with new soldiers. He was appointed to lead all trucking operations. Learning and adapting through his experiences as quickly as he could so that he could better the odds in his and his teammates' favor, even though there was only "one way in and one way out." When he fulfilled his duties, and when it was time to go home, you would think that this experience would deter anyone from looking back. My grandfather didn't; he re-enlisted in the National Guard.
