He was a B17 mechanic somewhere north of London, and was also rated to assist training pilots working on instrument only flights. He would sit in the nose and tell the pilot if he needed to pull up or turn. Before he passed he did speak about the toughness of the B17, how shot up they were but still brought their crews home. About 6 months he said he wanted to see a B17 before he died. I found one at the Langley AFB airshow. The men crewing the plane were very happy to speak with him about the plane and its upkeep. He was a Chief Petty Officer Stationed at Friday Harbor, Washington. At some point, he was promoted to Ensign and eventually LT j.g.. He was the Executive Officer on supply ship FS-404 in the South Pacific.
