He served as a gunner on a B-17 with the 305th Bomb Group in the 8th AAF. Howard would be KIA less than a month later in February of 1943, when his plane (42-5058) "Hun Hunter," was shot down over German occupied territory in Molac, France. In honor of our "Pop"...Red Hillstrom. Taken prisoner during the Battle of the Bulge in France. Prisoner at Camp Bad Orb, Germany. Staff Sergeant Hillstrom was a machine gun specialist. Liberated by Gen. Patton's troops on Good Friday, 1945. God Bless him and our "Ma", Margel (Johnson) Hillstrom. Proudly posted with our Love!
